APTICA receives new impetus from the Permanent Secretary of Fakkel-2000 for the integration of the blind in Cameroon
Mrs Truus Jonker says “The level of poverty of visually impaired persons and illiteracy in Cameroon require an urgent action”.
the permanent secretary of the Dutch Non-Governmental Organisation Fakkel-2000 was speaking in Yaounde during her last visit to the Association for the Promotion of Assistive Technology and the Education of the Blind (APTICA) last April 2018.
The purpose of her 7-day visit to Cameroon was to assess the progress so far made concerning the socioprofessional integration of visual impaired persons in the country and to bring the support of her organisation to the noble task being carried out by APTICA.
In the absence of the president MR Somb Lingom, Mrs Jonker was received by the secretary general of APTICA, Ms Efouba Nomo, who expressed the gratitude of the organisation to Fakkel-2000 which has been helping to send some blind to school. She also thanks Fakkel-2000 for the support towards small generating income projects, not without underscoring the need to have other partners like Fakkel-2000 for a better impact on the field because poverty among persons with disabilities is very rampant and illiteracy remains very high.
Truus was very elated for the warm welcome and the progress done by APTICA to empower blind in Cameroon.
Although her organisation has a limited budget and is working with other associations, she said it is not the time to relent wishing that her “meagre efforts” will soon be reinforced by others to roll back poverty, illiteracy and despair among the blind in Cameroon.
The colourful visit ended with the distribution of some white cane graciously brought by Mrs Jonker.
It should be noted that white canes are very important instruments in the life of the blind for their mobility; but difficult to find in Cameroon because of the cost.
